MARCINELLE

2012 - Video installation

This found footage work consists of you-tube videos in which primary source images were edited and re-edited by people aiming to commemorate audiovisually the tragedy which took place at Bois du Cazier in Marcinelle. On the 8th of August 1956, Bois du Cazier was the scene of the largest mining disaster in european history (today this region is part of the city of Charleroi, Belgium).
The multitude of the 262 deadly victims were labour immigrants, in large amount Italians from Abruzzo. This video was realised and exhibited in relation to the paintings of young italian artis Ester Grossi, herself born and raised in Abruzzo.
